What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is an organisation that teaches moral lessons and self knowledge through a participation in a progression of allegorical plays which are learnt and performed within each Lodge.

Freemasonry offers its members an approach to life which seeks to reinforce thoughtfulness for others, kindness in the community, honesty in business, courtesy in society and fairness in all things. Members are urged to regard the interests of the family as paramount, but also importantly teaches and practices concern for the less fortunate and help for those in need.

Men who are active Freemasons are so principally because they enjoy the challenges and the fellowship that Freemasonry offers. Participation in the dramatic presentations of moral lessons provide a member with an unique opportunity to learn more about himself, and encourage him to live in such a way that he will always strive to become a better person.

Each Freemason is encouraged to learn, and to show, humility. Then by a progression through a series of degrees he can gain an insight into increasingly complex moral and philosophical concepts. The structure and working of the Lodge offers members a framework for friendship, teamwork, personal development and family social events and experiences.

New members are required to make a solemn promise concerning their conduct in Lodge and in society in general and to keep confidential the traditional methods of recognising a Mason.

What is Freemasonry - Not?

Freemasonry is not a religion, it has no theology and does not teach any route to salvation. Although every Lodge meeting is opened and closed with a prayer, no discussion of religion is permitted during a Lodge meeting. Freemasonry is not a method of personal or employment advancement or financial gain through any association with, or connection to, any other members. Indeed, this is stipulated in the Masonic code of conduct. Whilst Freemasonry is not a secret society, Lodge meetings are private occasions, open only to masons. Grand Lodge does not publish any lists of members details without their permission.

Freemasonry is not a political organisation, but does not exclude those involved in politics at local, national or international level, however, political discussion is not allowed within Lodge meetings.

Freemasonry is not an introverted organisation, over the last 5 years Freemasons have raised over £75 million for a wide range of charities, both masonic and non-masonic alike.
